Measuring What Matters: Three community approaches to wellbeing assessment

One of the most common questions we get at WEAll California is “What do we need to measure for Wellbeing?”

For this event, we are trying a new format.   Three members of WEAll California have been working on systems of measurement and tracking.  These 3 versions are all different and bring unique perspectives.

Each person will do a brief presentation on their measurement system.  After each presentation, we will open up to questions from the community.  At the end of 30 minutes, we will have the next presentation and then Q&A for that presentation.

This event will be a 90 minute event.

Our presenters:

  • Dave Rice, President of UN SDG Orange County Chapter
  • Elizabeth Castillo, Professor of Sustainable Management at California State University San Bernardino
  • Dr. Stacy Rebich Hespanha, The Central Coast Wellbeing Indicators Framework

Leveraging a Crisis to Advance Wellbeing- Australian Fire Recovery

Megafire events are becoming increasingly frequent in California and around the world. To reflect on the recovery process, we ask:

  • How can we as a global community learn from one another’s recovery efforts to build local to global resilience?
  • What data helps us steer into healthier choices during recovery?
  • How can we include the community into the recovery process?

After the devastating 2019-20 Black Summer Bushfires in Australia, Bega Valley Data Collective (BVDC) created a community empowerment process and set parameters for data collection that drove amazing results. April Merrick and Tim Whitaker from Bega Valley Data Collective will share their purpose and the metrics and outcomes with us and answer your questions about how they might apply to our local recovery efforts. BVDC is a volunteer-based, not-for-profit association with the mission to empower the community to thrive through a wellbeing framework based on collaboration, data and action.

In addition, Carolyn Ardler and April from the Foundation for Regional & Rural Renewal will share their experiences of how funding organisations can work with Not-for-Profit organisations or community groups to ensure they can not only continue to support their communities after disasters but also be financially sustainable. FRRR is a not-for-profit organisation that connect common purposes and funding from government, business and philanthropy with the genuine local needs of rural people and places.

This session will be hosted by longtime WEAll CA Partner Catalina Langen of Civic Wellbeing Partners and Santa Monica Bay Area Human Relations Council.

Innovations in Community Wellbeing Metrics

How do you use metrics to not only drive change, but increase civic engagement from community members? Two organizations are partnering to make metrics part of a story that community members feel invested in and can relate to.

Dark Matter Labs and the David Suzuki Foundation are collaborating on a program in Canada where communities participate in setting the metrics that matter to them. Through an innovative approach, the qualities that matter to a community are turned into “cornerstone indicators” – metrics that are underpinned by numerous factors yet remain relatable human stories.

Maddy Capozzi, Emily Harris and Vlad Afanasiev of Dark Matter Labs, alongside Tara Campbell and Maham Kaleem of David Suzuki Foundation, will step us through two previous projects as well as their brand new pilot in Canada.
