Proposed CA Legislation to Remove Corruption from Elections

Common Cause California has a dedicated team that works to promote legislation to defend and strengthen American democracy.  Their top issues include fair redistricting, reducing corruption and innovations in public participation.

This year, Common Cause CA is a sponsor of a California State Bill that could be a big step toward public financing of elections.  Public Financing is one tool to mitigate the negative affects of unlimited money in our politics.

David Shor is the Money in Politics Program Manager at Common Cause CA. He is the staff lead for SB 42 and will educate us about the bill.

Sean McMorris is the Transparency, Ethics & Accountability Program Manager of Common Cause CA and he will educate us about Common Cause’s role in the state and initiatives he is working on.

Policy Deep Dive and Action Event – CA Utilities

Reclaim our Power is building support for SB332 to begin to move us from corporate for-profit utilities (PG&E, SC Edison) to local, community owned utilities.  Reclaim Our Power has done extensive studies showing multiple benefits:  savings, reduced risk and building community “power” (the other type).

California Senate Bill 332 will be introduced in early April and WEAll California would like to help get organizations to sign on to their letter in support of the bill.

We invite you to a presentation on the details of the studies and benefits next Thursday, March 27 at 4pm

Reclaim Our Power will answer any questions you have.  You can learn more at https://reclaimourpowerca.org/

Or if your organization would like to show support you can sign on to the letter here

Policy Discussion – The Future of Work

In February, we had invigorating discussions on Policy Platform strategies. (When you register, you will get access to those notes).

This month, we will begin our series of deep dives. Our first topic is “The Future of Work”.

If we are pursuing a long term strategy towards a society of health, wellbeing and equity, what is our ideal outcome for “jobs”? Shooting for fair wages, benefits and working conditions should be the minimum. Let’s set the end goal even higher.

Is a “jobs” guarantee the standard? What if automation eliminates whole sectors? Is Employee Ownership the standard? What other models exist? Or could exist?

Our discussion will center around these questions. We invite you to bring examples of policies or practices that you admire. Our brainstorm and sharing is intended to shift our collective thinking about what is possible in a future wellbeing economy.

You are invited to contribute at either 10am Pacific or 4pm Pacific.
